What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files a website asks your browser to store. Some are essential — they keep the site working, remember your preferences from one page to the next, and don't track you. Others are optional: they let us see, in aggregate, which pages people actually read, which helps us decide what to write more of.

We also use one piece of local storage (a similar technology that lives in your browser) to remember the choice you make below. That way the banner doesn't pop up every time you visit. Under UK law, both cookies and local storage are covered by the same rules — so we're listing both here.

Cookies and storage this site uses

Everything this site sets is listed below. We don't use any advertising, marketing, or social-media tracking cookies. No data is sold to or shared with third parties for advertising.

Name Category Provider Purpose Expiry
dartmouth_consent_v1 Strictly necessary This site (local storage, not a cookie) Remembers your cookie preferences so the banner doesn't reappear on every visit. Until you clear it
_ga Analytics Google Analytics 4 (Google LLC) Distinguishes one anonymous visitor from another so we can count unique users. 2 years
_ga_YQYVJC4193 Analytics Google Analytics 4 (Google LLC) Persists session state for our specific GA4 property (the trailing ID is our measurement ID). 2 years

Analytics cookies are only set if you tell us it's OK below. Until then, we send Google a signal that analytics storage is denied (Google Consent Mode v2). We've also enabled IP anonymisation on our GA4 property.

A note on Google Fonts

Our display and body typefaces (Newsreader and DM Sans) are loaded from Google Fonts. Google Fonts doesn't set cookies, but the request to load the font does expose your IP address to Google for the duration of that request. This is standard for most of the web, but if you'd prefer to block it, most browsers offer extensions that do so.

Your preferences

Choose what you're comfortable with. You can change your mind at any time — your choice is saved on this device only.

Strictly necessary

Required for the site to work and to remember your cookie choice. Always on — you can't opt out of these because nothing else would function.

Always on

Analytics

Lets Google Analytics 4 count anonymous visits so we can see which guides and pages people find useful. No advertising, no profiling, no data sharing for marketing. IP addresses are anonymised on collection.

Your rights

Under the UK GDPR and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), you have the right to refuse non-essential cookies, to withdraw your consent at any time, and to do so as easily as you gave it. That's why the "Reject all" button on our banner is the same size and visual weight as "Accept all" — anything else would be a dark pattern.

You also have the right to:

  • Ask what personal data we hold about you (a "subject access request")
  • Ask us to correct it if it's wrong, or delete it if we have no legitimate reason to keep it
  • Ask us to stop processing it, or to provide it to you in a portable format
  • Lodge a complaint with the UK supervisory authority

The supervisory authority is the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). You can reach them on 0303 123 1113 or via the online complaints form. We'd rather you came to us first, but you don't have to.

Changing or withdrawing your consent

Use the toggles above and tap "Save preferences" — that's the simplest way. You can also clear your browser's site data for dartmouthholiday.co.uk, which removes the stored choice and brings the banner back on your next visit. On most browsers that's under Settings → Privacy → Site data.

Browser-level controls (e.g. Safari's "Prevent cross-site tracking", Firefox's strict mode, or any content blocker) also override us — we won't try to set anything those settings refuse.
